CONTEXT:
IE BL/SC/JC are the letters of Rev. James W. Campbell, donated to the Library Archive by Adrian Gebruers. The collection was originally held in the Library’s Special Collections under the call number U. 205, and was transferred to the archive service in May 2017.
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE:
The letters of Rev. James W. Campbell, relating to the execution of Roger Casement and to a conversation with the mother of Patrick [Padraig] Pearse. Also included is Rev Campbell’s memorial card and a 35mm x 45mm, black and white, headshot photo of him as a young man.

1. 6th November 1940
Memorial card acknowledging the death of Rev. James W. Campbell in Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland on the 6th of November 1940. In addition to the date of his death, the card also details Rev. Campbell’s parish in England and the fact that he was also posted in China for three years.

3. 22nd June 1916
Letter written by Rev. Campbell to his family in Ireland. The letter recounts the details of a visit by Margaret Pearse and one of her daughters to Rev. Campbell’s home in the UK. Campbell outlines his impressions of mother and daughter, then goes on to note his conversation with Margaret Pearse, during which she details her interactions with her sons Patrick and William both just prior to the Easter Rising and during their incarceration at Mountjoy following the Rising.
4. 6th August 1916
Letter written by Rev. Campbell from Pentonville Prison in the UK, where he was called to attend to Roger Casement on the evening prior to his execution. Casement requested that Campbell be a witness to his execution and lead him onto the scaffold. Two other priests are also present; Dean Timothy Ring and Father James Carey, who heard Casement’s confession.
